Jaylen Brown told Daniel Radcliffe why NBA awards can never make a player happy

Jaylen Brown sat down with Daniel Radcliffe on October 29, and the matchup was as odd as it sounds: a five-time NBA All-Star trading thoughts on Harry Potter with the actor who played him. But the most interesting thing Brown said had nothing to do with the Wizarding World.

Across a conversation about personal recognition, public criticism and awards, the Philadelphia 76ers forward kept returning to one idea: other people can judge him, but he gets to decide which judgments actually matter.

Brown did not hide his feelings about individual honors. He called an awards committee "fake," a word guaranteed to start arguments. Beneath the provocation was a sharper point about chasing distinctions that depend on preferences and narratives rather than performance.

"If you wrap your identity in that, you will never be happy," Brown said.

What he measures instead

The revealing part came when he explained what he evaluates in his own game. "Was I a good leader today? How did I handle adversity today?" he asked. He also pointed to sacrifice, helping his team succeed, and knowing when a situation called for him to speak up.

Those are duties that exist whether or not a trophy follows. Brown would know both sides of it: his resume includes five All-Star selections, two All-NBA nods, and both conference finals and Finals MVP honors from Boston's 2024 championship run.

He drew a deliberate line between ignoring ordinary criticism and defending himself against false claims about his character. The first, he argued, gets easier with practice. The second can still earn a response, because an inaccurate allegation is not the same thing as a harsh opinion.

It is a quieter kind of wisdom than the "awards don't matter" soundbite, and the unlikely pairing gave it room to land.
