LeBron James chose Nike's $90M over Reebok and now has 24 signature shoes

Before LeBron James ever laced up a pair of his own signature sneakers, he turned down more cash to wear Nike. In 2003, Reebok wanted to add the 18-year-old out of St. Vincent–St. Mary High School to a roster that already included Shaquille O’Neal, Allen Iverson and Venus Williams. James instead accepted a lesser deal — still a reported $90 million — betting Nike’s long-term value over Reebok’s upfront offer. Twenty-four shoes later, the gamble paid off in a big way.

The first installment, the Air Zoom Generation of 2003, was nicknamed his “First Game” kicks, and its design borrowed from the Hummer H2 his mother gave him in high school. Designers packed it with molded-mesh heel panels, midfoot air ducts and Nike’s Zoom Air cushioning — tech that anchored the line for years. Collectors still chase that debut pair today.

From milk crates to a billion-dollar lifetime deal

The line quickly became a canvas for James’s own story. The LeBron 5’s ankle strap was meant to echo the milk crate he practiced shooting on as a kid, and street maps of Akron were printed on the sole and behind the tongue. The LeBron 7 marked the shift from Zoom Air to a full-length Air Max unit — the first shoe Nike built around a basketball-specific air bag.

The shoes tracked his career turns, too. The LeBron 8 launched right after he “took his talents to South Beach” and joined the Miami Heat, making the “South Beach” colorway one of Nike’s best-sellers. Wearing the LeBron 13, he led the Cavaliers to Cleveland’s first title in 52 years. And by 2018, Nike had locked him in with a lifetime deal reportedly worth upwards of $1 billion.

James also shaped the shoes himself. After the LeBron 15 dropped, he called it his favorite to date: “The performance benefits and sophisticated look make this shoe a force on and off the court.” For the LeBron 16, he asked Nike to lower the collar. “I wanted to get a little faster, ride a little bit closer to the court and be a little bit more dynamic,” he said.

It took two decades for James to finally release a low-top. The LeBron 20 of 2022 was a revolution for the brand and a hit with a far wider audience, and the low silhouette stuck around for the 21s. The 2026 LeBron 24 — the lightest LeBron ever made — shows the line has lost none of its momentum, even as James plays into a career longer than any NBA star before him.
