Cheerios finally gets a Ziploc resealable bag with a pour spout
Cheerios has finally fixed one of the oldest breakfast annoyances: reaching for an open box of cereal and finding it stale. After years of customer requests, the brand teamed up with Ziploc on a resealable bag called PantrySeal, and it is now rolling out on both Original Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios.
The clever part is the zipper itself. It only runs halfway across the bag, which leaves a spout at the top, so you can tip out a bowl of cereal without it spilling across the counter. No more folding the inner bag, no more searching for a chip clip, no more mystery crumbs in the pantry.
The change is overdue by the numbers. A 2025 survey found that 90 percent of cereal buyers already take extra steps to keep their cereal fresh, according to Delish, whether rolling the bag tight, clipping it shut or decanting the whole box into a separate container. That workaround has been the default for decades, even as the bag inside the box stayed stubbornly unsealable.
The catch is in the checkout aisle
For now, the new packaging is only available on Walmart.com, with a rollout to retailers nationwide expected over the next several months. Early pricing has already raised an eyebrow. An 11.2-ounce box is listed at $4.97 on sale, the same price as an 18-ounce Family Size box, and its regular price of $7.65 sits above a Mega box that is more than twice the size.
Social media users are amused, if not entirely convinced. "They couldn't have done this 30 years ago?" one X user wrote. "Recession indicator - things got so bad they realized we wouldn't buy more if the cereal got stale," another commented on Instagram. A third kept it simple: "When cereal is $9 a box now it's the least they can do."
General Mills has not confirmed any broader price changes, so whether the new bag ends up costing more once it reaches more stores is still an open question. For now, Original and Honey Nut Cheerios with the PantrySeal bag are on Walmart.com for $4.97.
