Serena Williams misses 2027 Tennis Hall of Fame ballot after 2026 comeback

Few athletes have earned a Hall of Fame spot as clearly as Serena Williams — 23 Grand Slam singles titles, the most by any woman in the Open Era. Yet the one honor everyone expected to be automatic is suddenly years further away than anyone imagined, and her own comeback is the reason.

The International Tennis Hall of Fame unveiled its Class of 2027 ballot earlier this week. Ash Barty, Juan Martín del Potro and Svetlana Kuznetsova earned player-category nominations, but Williams was conspicuously absent from the list.

Tennis insider Jon Wertheim called her omission the real drama of the ballot. On paper, her 2022 exit from the sport looks eligible — Barty retired that very same year and still made the cut. So why the gap?

Why a comeback backfired

Williams played what she called the final chapter of her career at the 2022 US Open, famously saying she was “evolving away from tennis” rather than retiring. But her return changed the math. After reentering the ITIA’s anti-doping testing pool in 2025, she was listed as eligible to compete again from February 22, 2026, and actually returned in June — nearly four years after her previous professional appearance.

She opened with a doubles wild card at Queen’s Club, then took a Wimbledon singles wild card and a women’s doubles slot with sister Venus. Maya Joint of Australia beat her in three sets in the first round, 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-3, and her youngest daughter watched her play singles in person for the first time.

Under the Hall’s rules, a player-category candidate must not have been a “significant factor” on tour during the five calendar years before election. The Hall previously said its Enshrinee Eligibility Committee would determine Williams’ applicable five-year period — and because she competed again in 2026, that clock now has to be measured from this season, not from her 2022 departure.

Compare that with Roger Federer. He announced his retirement in 2022, but the Hall treated his last significant tour year as 2021, when he played his final ATP singles match at Wimbledon. That made him eligible for the Class of 2026, where he was the only player-category candidate elected.

The takeaway is simple and slightly brutal: by coming back, Serena may have pushed her own induction back by years. The comeback was meant to add a chapter to the legend — instead it reset the one date everyone already had circled.
