Dua Lipa brings back the statement hat in a feathered Chanel couture look
The forecast for fall? A little more drama up top, and Dua Lipa is leading the way. At the 2026 WSJ Magazine Innovator Awards at New York's Museum of Modern Art, the singer made the case for statement millinery in a look from Matthieu Blazy's fall 2026 Chanel couture collection.
Styled by her longtime collaborator Lorenzo Posocco, Lipa wore a white-and-black, heavily textured tweed skirt suit with a straight-cut jacket, jeweled buttons and black feathery trim at the collar and cuffs. With it came pointed black pumps, Bulgari diamond earrings and a layered pearl anklet. But the real showpiece was perched on her head: an extravagant, inky-black asymmetric confection of wispy feathers and spiky embellishments, tilted at a jaunty angle.
The effect was ladylike, but far from prim and proper.
Hats are having a whole moment
Lipa is no stranger to a good topper. All summer a baseball cap was practically glued to her head, whether she was living that la vacanza lifestyle or scooting between studio sessions. Now that her wardrobe has shifted into fall, so has her approach to accessorizing - and Chanel has been a constant, from a glossy oxblood crocodile-embossed coat she wore to a Yankees game with Callum Turner to a tomato-red knit dress at the London Literature Festival.
She's in excellent company. Elle Fanning, embracing the gloriously eccentric wardrobe of her Hunger Games character Effie Trinket, has been turning up to the Sunrise on the Reaping press tour in a pale-pink Robert Wun pillbox hat topped with a miniature ballerina, and a satin red pillbox by milliner Rachel Trevor-Morgan. Taylor Russell has even turned her hat habit into a fuzzy collaboration with designer Ilana Blumberg, while the sold-out baker boy caps from John Galliano's Zara collaboration proved the demand for a distinctive topper is going mainstream.
The takeaway from Lipa's latest Chanel moment is simple: this fall, it's worth getting a little carried away with your headgear.
