Lay's new turkey chip tastes like stuffing and gravy — and it actually works
Just in time for Thanksgiving, Lay's is betting big on America's biggest food holiday. Beginning in late October, the brand is rolling out two limited-edition flavors inspired by the stars of the dinner table — Cheddar Scalloped-Style Potatoes and Roasted Holiday Turkey. A Delish taste test says both are better than they have any right to be.
Turkey-flavored chips sound more like a dare than a craving, which is exactly why reviewer Amanda Mactas was skeptical. The doubts didn't survive the bag. "And before you clutch your pearls over the more ambitious of those flavors, hear me out. They're pretty damn good," she writes.
How each flavor actually tastes
The Cheddar Scalloped-Style Potatoes chips are the safer play — Lay's is starting with potatoes, after all — but they go hard on the cheddar, with a sprinkling of parsley that pulls them surprisingly close to the dish they're mimicking. Mactas says they deliver "that creamy, comforting flavor without being nearly as indulgent as actual scalloped potatoes," and calls them a win.
Roasted Holiday Turkey was the bag that made her uneasy, right up until the first crunch. The chips read "more like stuffing and gravy than an actual bite of turkey," with thyme, onion powder and pepper coming through strongest. That's not a bad thing: it reminds her of the sides that usually share the plate with the bird.
Lay's isn't stopping there. On November 8, the brand brings its long-running Canadian favorite Maple Bacon to U.S. shelves for the very first time. Later in November, it swings into dessert territory with Wavy Milk Chocolate and Wavy Dubai-Style Dark Chocolate — a sweet-and-salty pairing that Mactas, a self-described "sucker for chocolate and potato chips," can't wait to try.
Both Thanksgiving flavors are limited-edition, so the snack-aisle turkey dinner lasts only as long as the stock does. Cheddar Scalloped-Style Potatoes and Roasted Holiday Turkey hit shelves in late October, and if the taste test buzz is any sign, they'll go fast.
