Gwyneth Paltrow lands first lead TV role in Netflix's A24 drama 'The Apology'
Gwyneth Paltrow has landed her first-ever lead television role, and it is not a light one. The Oscar winner will play Evelyn Amspoker in "The Apology," an A24 drama that Netflix has picked up for two seasons.
Evelyn's son was murdered 18 years ago in a cold case that gripped the nation. Then a stranger appears and confesses, and justice suddenly looks within reach. "When a stranger suddenly appears and confesses, justice finally seems possible," the official logline reads — until Evelyn and her husband, Caleb, learn the killer could walk away with a reduced sentence. "Faced with that unbearable truth, Evelyn and Caleb decide to take matters into their own hands."
That premise sets up a tense moral thriller: a grieving mother and father who stop waiting for the courts to deliver. For Paltrow, the role is a return to the kind of dramatic, emotionally charged material that defined her earlier film career.
Who's behind the show
"The Apology" comes from creator, showrunner and writer Joe Murtagh, who previously made "The Woman in the Wall," with Oscar-nominated director Thomas Vinterberg ("Another Round") at the helm. Joe Hipps of Cut To executive produces alongside Murtagh, Vinterberg and Paltrow, and A24 is the studio.
For all of Paltrow's big-screen credits — "Emma," "Sliding Doors," "Shakespeare in Love" and the "Iron Man" franchise — television has been the quieter part of her career. She played substitute teacher Holly Holiday across five episodes of "Glee" and had a supporting role in Ryan Murphy's "The Politician" on Netflix, but she has never before led a series of her own, with the rest of her small-screen work coming in scattered guest spots.
The two-season order is an unusually confident upfront commitment: most dramas wait to see how their first season lands before Netflix orders another. No premiere date was announced, but whatever happens in the streamer's executive ranks, Paltrow's first small-screen lead now has a full runway.
