Nicolas Cage and wife Riko Shibata hit the red carpet after sinkhole left them 'homeless'
Nicolas Cage and his wife Riko Shibata were all smiles on a red carpet date night, just days after the actor admitted their Malibu mansion nearly fell into a giant sinkhole.
The pair held hands at the premiere of Cage's new movie "Madden" in Los Angeles on Wednesday night. Cage, 62, wore a black suit with an orange tie, while Shibata turned out in a multi-colored printed dress in orange, brown and blue tones.
Their cheerful appearance came after a rough stretch for the household. Cage told fans at LA Comic Con on Saturday that he's been "homeless" since September, when coastal erosion and heavy rain opened a massive hole in his beachfront property's driveway.
"I'm currently a little bit homeless," he said when asked about his Halloween plans. "Something happened to my house in Malibu so I'm just sort of living in hotels."
The sinkhole that started in the driveway
The $10.5 million home began sinking after a deep hole formed in the driveway. Photos obtained by Page Six showed a porta-potty and pieces of a privacy fence sucked inside. Initially reported at 30 feet by 30 feet, the hole has since expanded toward the front door, and neighbors on the street were also evacuated over safety concerns.
Cage filed for an emergency building permit to pack sandbags against the exterior of the home, along with requests to clear asphalt debris and collect soil samples. The city approved those requests.
Despite the chaos, Cage said he still planned to take his and Shibata's four-year-old daughter, August, trick-or-treating around Santa Monica, then watch "The Shining" once she fell asleep. The actor took over the 4,000-square-foot Malibu spread in 2024 and also keeps a full-time property in Nevada.
