Fifty-year-old Kate Winslet slammed the "horrific and destructive" plastic surgery epidemic worldwide and warned of the dangers of weight-loss drugs. In a new interview with The Times, the Titanic star claimed that "young women no longer have a concept of what it truly means to be beautiful" and are now simply "obsessed" with looking perfect to get more likes on social media.
In an interview, the Oscar-winning actress noted that society needs to "stay true to itself" because "there's a hell of a mess out there" due to pressure to look a certain way. She also highlighted the need to normalize aesthetic procedures.
"It's terrible and destructive. When a person's self-esteem is so tied to their appearance, it's scary. There are times when I think that's how it should be, when I look at actresses at events, dressed however they want, in whatever form. But so many people are on weight-loss drugs," Winslet said.
She also made it clear that she doesn't consider such drugs harmless. "Some choose to be themselves, others do everything possible to not be themselves. But do they understand what they're investing in? The disregard for their own health is simply appalling," she noted.
Winslet added that she is frustrated "now more than ever" that the younger generation seems to have lost sight of what "is truly beautiful."
Kate has never been afraid to express her opinion on global beauty trends. She admitted that early in her career, she was bullied for her weight. Last year, she revealed that she refused to cover her waist during the filming of her new movie, "Lee," after a crew member pointed out her protruding tummy. The actress stated that she isn't embarrassed by her less-than-perfect appearance on screen. "I'm proud of it because my face is my life, and that's important. I wouldn't even think of hiding it," she explained.
The star has been opposed to plastic surgery for many years, as "it contradicts her moral principles, the way she was raised by her parents, and what she considers natural beauty." "I want to say to all women who try to emulate the Hollywood image: it's a myth," she said in an interview.
"Women spend hours on hair and makeup to look [perfect] on the red carpet, and probably have cosmetic procedures every day for a week leading up to the event. I know because I've done it myself," she recalled, noting that all this effort remains just "a moment in time."
"For me, the secret to aging at any age, Hollywood or not, is accepting yourself as you are and realizing that we can't fight change. Sure, we can do things to maintain our health and skin to feel a little better and live a little longer. But for me, beauty that comes from within and a lack of self-criticism are very important," she shared her view on the issue.
Winslet herself takes an "inside-out" approach, focusing on what she puts into her body, especially before public appearances. "Sleep and health play a huge role in looking fresh. If I'm overtired or stressed, no amount of makeup or hair can hide the marks on my face," she said.
Kate admitted that she sticks to a balanced diet, but gives up her favorite foods a few days before a red carpet event. "I try to take care of myself in the last few days before these moments. Nothing special or expensive... my main advice is water. Stay hydrated, and your skin will thank you," the actress explained.
Kate Winslet recently walked the red carpet herself, accompanied by her 21-year-old son, who is also pursuing a film career. The actress's daughter's Cannes debut had previously sparked online discussion, with many noting that 25-year-old Mia, who is also following in her mother's footsteps, doesn't fit Hollywood beauty standards.
