Houston wins Skytrax's Best Art in the Airport award for a 4th straight year

Skytrax has revealed the 2026 winners of its "World's Best Art in the Airport" award — the nod Condé Nast Traveler calls "the Oscars of the aviation industry" — and Houston Airport System came first for the fourth year running. The Texas twin, spanning George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) and William P. Hobby (HOU), finished ahead of Singapore Changi and a very meme-friendly Denver.

The Houston win rests on serious art. At IAH, Dale Chihuly's handblown Coastal Prairie Fiori is a snaking glass centerpiece of 537 individual pieces suspended from the rafters; at Hobby, David Adickes' We Love Houston photo stop stands 16.5 feet tall. The public art program also funds artist residencies and "Harmony in the Air," which brings more than 120 live musicians into the terminals.

Runner-up Singapore Changi — the airport that has already won "World's Best Airport" 14 times — builds its program around nature meeting technology. Terminal 1's Kinetic Rain sends 1,216 copper-plated droplets rising and falling in sync, while Han Meilin's Coming Home statues greet visitors at Terminal 3's South Arrival Immigration Hall.

Denver International took bronze for leaning into its strangeness: a red-eyed blue mustang nicknamed Blucifer, Leo Tanguma murals, a Freemason time capsule and cast-iron talking gargoyles in the baggage claim. Construction posters even read "Thanks for being patient. The lizard people keep stealing our tools."

"We don't think of it as a problem at all because it doesn't present a problem. It's just a fun story to have."

The rest of the top 10

Vancouver (YVR) placed fourth for its Coast Salish welcome area, anchored by Susan Point's Welcome Figures and her Spindle Whorl, billed as the largest in the world. Fifth went to Bengaluru's Kempegowda International, whose "Terminal in a Garden" at Terminal 2 holds a museum with 103 artists and 314 works. Amsterdam Schiphol came sixth thanks to Maarten Baas' Real Time Schiphol Clock, M.C. Escher's 48-foot Metamorphosis mural and a free 24-hour Rijksmuseum annex.

San Diego (seventh) debuted five exhibits with its new Terminal 1 in 2025, including a 21-foot jellyfish sculpture called RISE. Chicago O'Hare took eighth — look up at Ernestine, a four-story fiberglass Brachiosaurus in Terminal 1 — ahead of San Francisco, the only airport whose museum is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International rounded out the list at ten with the largest collection of them all: more than 7,000 artifacts in the Artbeat of New India museum.
