Not "housewife," but "generation shaper." The UAE has abandoned the old term.
In honor of Mother's Day, the 43-year-old Crown Prince of Dubai announced a symbolic initiative in Dubai: replacing the term "housewife" with "generational educator." Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum gave this directive to the Community Development Authority, Gulf Today reports.
The new term will appear on Emirates ID cards and other official government documents. Beyond official documents, the term "generation shaper" is now intended for use in social programs and public discourse.
This step is aimed at recognizing the role of mothers in shaping families and society as a whole. The introduction of the term "generation shaper" helps reframe motherhood as an active contribution to national development, rather than a passive role at home. "You are the foundation of all good things," Sheikh Hamdan told mothers.
Media reports indicate that, while the change is symbolic, it has cultural and social significance that will set a precedent for defining and evaluating the role of childcare in the UAE.
Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum is a member of the ruling dynasty of the Emirate of Dubai, the son of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and the Crown Prince of Dubai. He leads an active lifestyle, as evidenced by his social media posts. Sheikh Hamdan is friends with celebrities, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Will Smith, UFC star Khabib Nurmagomedov, and businessman Elon Musk.
The Prince of Dubai's hobbies include photography, skydiving, diving, falconry, and much more. In his free time, the Prince of Dubai writes poetry under the pseudonym Fazza, which he dedicates, among other things, to his family. Little is known about Sheikh Hamdan's wife: only that her name is Sheikha bin Saeed bin Thani Al Maktoum and that she is his cousin.
