The Godfather and Apocalypse Now star Robert Duvall has died.
American actor and director Robert Duvall, known for his roles in "The Godfather" and "Apocalypse Now," has died at the age of 95. Variety reported this, citing a statement from his wife.
"Yesterday we said goodbye to my beloved husband, dear friend, and one of the greatest actors of our time. Bob passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by love and comfort. To the world, he was an Oscar winner, an actor, a director, a storyteller. To me, he was everything," Luciana Duvall wrote on her Facebook page*.
Robert Duvall was born in San Diego in 1931. His first significant role was in To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), but it was The Godfather (1972) with Marlon Brando, where he played Tom Hagen, consigliere and lawyer for the Corleone family, that brought him international fame. Another landmark project for Duvall was Apocalypse Now (1979), where he played Lieutenant Colonel Kilgore, who uttered the iconic phrase, "I love the smell of napalm in the morning." He also starred in films such as THX 1138 (1971), The Great Santini (1979), The Apostle (1997), A Civil Action (1998), Gone in 60 Seconds (2000), The Judge (2014), and many others.
Duvall was nominated for an Oscar seven times. In 1984, he won the coveted statuette for his role in Tender Mercies. He also won four Golden Globes and a BAFTA Award during his career. He was married four times, but had no children from any of his marriages.
