"I'm Used to You Letting Me Down." Katy Perry Releases Song About Her Breakup with Orlando Bloom
Katy Perry released a new song and video dedicated to her recent split from Orlando Bloom after nine years together. In the track, titled "Bandaids," the 41-year-old singer discusses the reasons behind their breakup and her attempts to save their love.
In the song's lyrics, Perry reflects on how emotional distance has destroyed their intimacy: "It's not what you did, it's what you didn't do / You were there, but you weren't there," "I'm used to you letting me down / There's no point in sending flowers now / I tell myself you'll change, but you never do," and "It's not that hard to ask me how my day was." In the chorus, the singer describes how she desperately tried to save the relationship: "I tried so hard to keep us together / Tried every tranquilizer / Lowered my expectations / Made excuses for you / Put bandages on a broken heart."
The music video reinforces the track's central theme: throughout the video, Perry's lyrical character is plagued by disasters. For example, in one scene, she drops her engagement ring in a food processor and, trying to retrieve it, injures her hand. However, the video's ending seems to suggest that Katy holds no ill will toward her ex. In the final scene, she stands on the tracks, trying to retrieve her stuck foot as a train rushes toward her, and suddenly notices a daisy. The flower represents her and Bloom's daughter, Daisy Dove. It is at this moment that the heroine escapes the trap and is symbolically freed from a series of failures, and in the background the following lines are heard: "If I had to do it all over again, I would. / In the end, our love was worth it."
As a reminder, Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom met at the Golden Globes in 2016. They broke up a year later, but later got back together and got engaged in 2019. Their breakup was announced in June of this year. The reasons for the breakup were different schedules, as well as disagreements amid the failure of the singer's new album and public criticism of her controversial space flight. Nevertheless, the former lovers continue to communicate for the sake of their four-year-old daughter and sometimes even spend time together.
Just a few weeks after the couple's split, rumors surfaced online that the singer had begun dating Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. They were first spotted together at a restaurant in Montreal, then at Katy's concert, and later, paparazzi captured them kissing on a yacht. They recently set the record straight and made their first public appearance as a couple. Incidentally, Orlando Bloom has already responded to his ex's new romance.
