"I decided to reinvent the wheel." Macaulay Culkin spoke about psychological trauma due to a difficult relationship with his father

Macaulay Culkin posted on Instagram* on the occasion of Father's Day and spoke about his difficult relationship with his own father.

“If you know a little about me, then you know that in the past I have had a difficult relationship with Father’s Day. But since I became a dad myself, I decided to reinvent the wheel. Now I try to make this day a holiday for my boys , not for themselves. After all, they are the ones who made me a father (no offense, Brenda)," he wrote. The actor has two sons with his girlfriend Brenda Song, to whom he proposed in 2022.

Macaulay's relationship with his own father, Keith Culkin, finally soured after he removed his parents' names from his trust fund at age 16.

He had previously accused his father of physical and emotional abuse. After Macaulay starred in Home Alone as a child and became a star, his father quit his job and "dedicated himself entirely to managing his son's career." At the same time, according to the actor, his father “denied him some things.” For example, the boy did not sleep on the bed, but was forced to sleep on the sofa. Often Macaulay did not sleep all night: his father forced him to learn lines, although the boy felt tired.

"I think he just wanted to break me. He wanted me to know that he was in charge, and if he didn't want us to sleep on the bed, we wouldn't sleep on the bed," Culkin said.

Macaulay also said that his father threatened him with physical harm if he could not perform well and play his role. “Do a good job, or I’ll hit you,” he said. He was a bad man. He abused me both physically and mentally. I can show you all my scars if I want,” Culkin admitted.

"My father was jealous of me. He was a bad man. He abused me. In everything he tried to do in life, I succeeded before I was 10 years old," the actor recalled.

According to Culkin, his father kept his income from acting a secret from him, and took almost all the profits for himself. And in 1995, when his parents divorced, a fierce struggle developed between them over custody of their son and his condition. Culkin later deprived both of his parents of access to his fortune.

In 2016, Keith Culkin said in an interview that he no longer considered Macaulay his son.

It is worth noting that Macaulay is not the only actor in his family. His younger brother Kiran followed in his footsteps. He became especially famous after the release of the series “Descendants,” where he played one of the main roles, and received several awards for it, including an Emmy Award.
