"It was a mockery that bordered on insult." Kate Winslet talks about how she was criticized for her weight when she was young
Actress Kate Winslet spoke about fat shaming in Hollywood, recalled offensive comments addressed to her at the beginning of her career and noted that now the situation is different and young actresses today can fight against it.
On The Today Show, Kate Winslet said that when she was young, she had to make an effort to be herself. "Everything has changed - now young women are born with a voice. They have a voice, they learn to hold it and stand up for themselves. They know that they matter. They count on something. It's an exciting time for young actresses."
As Kate previously said, when she started her career, everything was completely different. “When I was younger, people called my agent and asked, ‘What is her weight?’ I’m not kidding. So it’s encouraging that things have started to change.” Kate, who became popular after the 1997 film Titanic, where she starred alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, admitted that she had complexes because of her figure. For example, a young actress was told that she would only play fat women.
Last October, the actress told the Happy Sad Confused podcast that she had to endure a lot of "borderline offensive" jokes from fanatical Titanic fans. For example, it was her who was blamed by many for the most controversial scene in the film: when Rose and Jack get out of the sinking ship and the girl ends up on a broken door. For years, viewers debated whether they both could have fit on the door and escaped, with some claiming it was all because of Kate Winslet's weight.
"Obviously, I was too fat. Why were they so cruel to me? They were so mean. I wasn't too fat," Kate says.
The actress added that she wished she had responded to her haters differently at the time. “I would say, ‘Don’t you dare treat me like that. I'm a young woman, my body is changing, I understand it, I have deep insecurities." I'm terrified, don't make the situation even more complicated than it already is. This is bullying that bordered on insult."
