Chip City closes all 22 cookie shops — and fans mourn the Cookies 'N' Cream
Chip City, the New York–born cookie chain famous for massive, gooey cookies and a rotating flavor lineup, has closed all 22 of its remaining stores. Employees were told on Thursday, October 1, that the shops would permanently close at the end of the day.
In a statement posted to its website, the company said: "Despite extensive efforts to stabilize our business in the face of significant macroeconomic headwinds, we have made the very difficult decision to close all of our Chip City locations. We are grateful to our dedicated employees and loyal customers who have supported us for the past 10 years."
A fast rise — and a sudden stop
The chain started in 2017 as a side project in Astoria, Queens, where childhood friends Peter Phillips and Teddy Gailas tried to recreate the cookies they grew up with. It became a hit on the strength of oversized cookies and weekly flavors like s'mores, funfetti, blueberry cheesecake and Cookies 'N' Cream.
Growth sped up after Danny Meyer's Enlightened Hospitality Investments put $10 million into Chip City in 2022, when the brand had 14 locations. Another $7.5 million followed in 2024, and the chain eventually reached 45 company-owned stores.
But it had already been shrinking this year. Locations in Connecticut, Massachusetts and Virginia closed earlier, and company president Nicolas Baizan told employees that consumers were spending less and shifting preferences had hurt sales.
Fans are not taking the news quietly. "I'm going to miss them 😢," one person wrote on Instagram, while another admitted, "I literally had a cookie at Chip City a few days ago wtf." Others were already diagnosing the collapse: "Another company that expanded too fast," one commenter wrote, while another called Chip City "the best cookie chain in NY aside from Levain."
Competitor Gooey on the Inside jumped in quickly: "We are proudly accepting all Chip City customers 😂😂😂." A decade ago the brand was a single Astoria storefront; at its peak it was a multistate operation with dozens of shops and a devoted following for that Cookies 'N' Cream.
