The daughter of India's richest man attended the Met Gala wearing 1,800 carats of jewelry and carrying a mango in a string bag.
Isha Ambani, the daughter of India's richest man, Mukesh Ambani, wore 1,800 carats of jewelry to the Met Gala Costume Institute Ball and carried an unusual accessory—a mango in a string bag.
At the event, 34-year-old Isha wore a Gaurav Gupta gown: a sari woven from pure gold thread. Over 1,200 hours of hand embroidery were spent by 50 artisans on the sari's border. The concept for the look was the work of Isha's mother, Nita Ambani, and jewelry house Kantilal Chhotalal: her idea was to incorporate the family's diamond archive into the couturier's work. Over 200 diamonds from Nita's personal collection were hand-stitched onto the metallic embroidery of her daughter's gown. The total weight of the stones in Isha's entire look exceeded 1,800 carats.
The sculpture behind her hair also took over 150 hours to create: artist Subodh Gupta hand-formed each jasmine bud from copper, paper, and brass, then coated them with Indian paints. The mango accessory Isha holds in a clear chain bag is a sculpture that symbolizes fertility in Indian culture.
Isha Ambani is the only daughter of Indian businessman Mukesh Ambani. In 2008, Forbes named her among the wealthiest young heiresses. Since 2014, she has served on the board of directors of several of her family's subsidiaries. Isha has also opened over a hundred GAP stores in India and the large Jio World Plaza shopping and entertainment center in Mumbai. In 2018, Mukesh's daughter married entrepreneur Anand Piramal, and four years later, they had twins.
Last year at the Met Gala, Isha wore a necklace like Anne Hathaway's character in Ocean's 8.
Mukesh Ambani is Asia's richest man, with a net worth of $89.4 billion. He is the managing director of Reliance Industries, India's largest private sector company. In 2024, the wedding of one of Mukesh's sons was the subject of intense online speculation, featuring 2,500 dishes, a nine-page dress code, and Rihanna as one of the celebrity guests. David Beckham and the Kardashians also attended the celebration. The six-month celebration is rumored to have cost $600 million.
