Steven Spielberg said he believes in the existence of UFOs
Iconic director Steven Spielberg, who gave the world "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," has once again addressed the topic of extraterrestrial civilizations. This time, he admitted his conviction that aliens exist.
"I don't know any more than you do, but I have a very strong suspicion that we are not alone here on Earth right now—and I made a film about it. No one should think that we are the only intelligent civilization in the entire universe. Since I was a child, I believed that we are not alone. It goes without saying. The real question is: are we alone now? And have we been alone for the last 80 years? Have we been alone for the last few thousand years?" The Hollywood Reporter quotes the 79-year-old director as saying.
Spielberg says his interest in aliens dates back to his childhood—he's always been fascinated by the night sky and its boundless mysteries. "It gave me a profound conviction that life exists beyond our familiar world," he added. However, the director emphasized that his position is nothing more than a personal belief, unsupported by evidence, but no less valid than the skepticism of those who don't believe in aliens.
Interestingly, Spielberg has now decided to return to the theme that brought him worldwide fame. His new sci-fi film, "Day of Unmasking," will be released worldwide on June 12, 2026. In the story, chaos engulfs the planet after the government has concealed the existence of aliens for decades. During a live broadcast, a weather presenter (Emily Blunt) unexpectedly becomes hostage to an alien force.
As a reminder, the theme of aliens runs through the Oscar-winning director's entire work—from Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) to War of the Worlds (2005). Spielberg himself has repeatedly acknowledged that these films are not simply science fiction, but a reflection of his own reflections on humanity's place in the universe.
The recent surge of interest in the UFO topic has been fueled by a statement by former US President Barack Obama that went viral online: in a February podcast with Brian Cohen, he acknowledged the existence of unidentified aerial phenomena.
