"Dawson's Creek" star James Van Der Beek has died at age 48.

James Van Der Beek, best known for his role as Dawson Leery on Dawson's Creek, has died at the age of 49. His family announced the actor's death on Instagram, after battling cancer.*

"Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed away peacefully this morning. He faced his final days with courage, faith, and dignity. We have much to share about his wishes, his love for humanity, and the sanctity of time. Those days will come. In the meantime, we ask for peace and privacy as we mourn our beloved husband, father, son, brother, and friend," the statement read.
