"It's Cruel Violence Against Yourself." Demi Moore Speaks Out About Her Desire to Conform to Beauty Standards
In an interview with The Guardian, Demi Moore discussed how the desire for an ideal appearance and conformity to stereotypes is violence against oneself.
The 61-year-old actress spoke about her work on a new film, the body horror Substance. In it, she played a star who was kicked out of her own project, arguing that "a woman has value until she leaves her fertile age." After that, the heroine tries a serum on herself that should restore her youth.
"I took this situation of a woman in the entertainment industry who is facing rejection and deep despair. Everything that seemed important to her in her life is disappearing. What really struck me was the brutal violence against herself. It's not what others do to you, it's what we do to ourselves," says Demi Moore.
She says that now, anyone who is in the public eye faces public condemnation. "We live in a time of great judgment. People can judge each other anonymously and they do it cruelly. I think that the desire to judge others is a reflection of one's own problems and a way to satisfy one's own sense of self-worth. I have learned to just ignore it when things like this happen. How I feel about it determines what it will mean to me."
Demi Moore is known for her reverent attitude to her appearance. The actress has been repeatedly suspected of having had plastic surgeries, and some of them, as fans of the actress assume, were unsuccessful. She herself prefers not to comment on this issue.
Recently, the issue of maintaining youth and a slim figure has been actively discussed in the information space. Stars are criticized for the risky manipulations they perform with their bodies, claiming that they promote sacrificing health for the sake of conforming to beauty standards.
