Magazine cover with “unrecognizable” Kate Middleton criticized online
Social networks are discussing the new cover of Tatler magazine with a portrait of Kate Middleton: according to many, in the painting by Hannah Uzor, the Duchess of Wales does not look like herself at all. The painting shows Kate wearing a white Jenny Packham dress and ruby tiara, the same look she wore to the Buckingham Palace banquet in November 2023.
The magazine decided to release a new issue with Kate on the cover to support her as the Duchess is currently battling cancer. However, fans of the British royal family did not appreciate the gesture and felt that such a portrait of Kate looked like a mockery: “When did she become Asian?”, “It seemed to me that this was the Empress of Japan”, “A terrible portrait!”, “Doesn’t look like Kate at all” “What, was this drawn by a child?” the Daily Mail quotes comments from people on social networks.
Hannah Uzor is a British artist of African descent, and the portrait itself completes a series of Tatler covers dedicated to the royal family: in 2022, a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II appeared on the cover of the magazine, and in 2023, King Charles III.
Recently, another painting was at the center of a scandal - the first official portrait of Charles III by Jonathan Yeo. The unusual color scheme of the picture (King Charles in a red uniform is depicted on a red background) immediately gave rise to many memes: King Charles was compared to the medieval tyrant Vigo of the Carpathians, Dracula from the film by Francis Ford Coppola, Han Solo from Star Wars and even... with a tampon.
