8 main moments of the Oscars 2024: Ken's song, jokes about drugs, a burst dress and a cute dog
The Oscar ceremony took place in Los Angeles: the well-deserved triumph of “Oppenheimer” and the guests’ outfits on the red carpet are being discussed all over the world. However, the ceremony itself, as usual, was full of events: Ryan Gosling created a sensation with his song Ken, Margot Robbie walked in a “protest dress,” and host Jimmy Kimmel offended award winners Robert Downey Jr. and Emma Stone. Spltnk tells what the Oscars will remember this year.
1. Offensive jokes from the host
Recently, not many social events have gone without scandals with presenters. Everyone still remembers the high-profile story with Will Smith, who slapped him in the face for host Chris Rock’s tactless joke about his wife’s alopecia, and then spent another year dealing with the consequences. And the Golden Globes were not without offense: host Joe Koy made many celebrity guests feel uncomfortable, including with his inappropriate jokes, and Taylor Swift became completely angry because of comments about her new romance with Travis Kelsey.
This time, the host got it from Robert Downey Jr. and Emma Stone. At the beginning of the ceremony, Kimmel made a rather harsh joke about Robert's drug addiction, which he had struggled with for many years. “Robert Downey Jr. is at one of the highest points of his career,” the host said, after which the actor rubbed his nose. "Is there something on your nose or is it just a drug addict's habitual gesture? But look at him, he's so handsome, so talented, he's won every award possible. Is that an acceptance speech in your pocket or do you just have a rectangular penis?" - Kimmel said from the stage. Robert Downey Jr. did not appreciate the joke: judging by his face, he was clearly dissatisfied.
Fans of Downey Jr. criticized Kimmel and considered the joke insensitive and simply offensive. Problems with drugs at one time almost destroyed the career of Robert Downey Jr.: in 1999, he even went to prison, where he spent 15 months. The actor struggled with addiction for a long time and managed to cope - after that he made a career, gaining worldwide fame.
Emma Stone also got it from Kimmel. After watching clips from the film "The Lost Losers" (the same clip is shown for every picture nominated for Best Picture), he said: "This seems to be all the moments of "The Lost and Lost People" that we are destined to see." The presenter hinted at scandals surrounding the film due to explicit scenes in which Emma Stone's character, a woman with the brain of a newborn child, has sex: they were considered excessive and unethical. Stone herself was not delighted with the joke: she disgruntledly whispered something in her husband’s ear: according to users’ suggestions, the actress said “Oh my God” or called Kimmel a “moron.”
Kimmel did not ignore Ryan Gosling with his remarks. “Look, kids,” he said, pointing to Margot Robbie and Ryan. “Barbie and Ken are sitting next to each other. Ryan and Margot, I want you to know that even if you don’t win an Oscar today, don’t despair, because you already won into the genetic lottery." The actors liked the joke, but at the same time Gosling hugged his sister, who was sitting next to him, on camera. "Ryan, you're so hot. Let's go camping together and not tell our wives," Kimmel added. The network reacted ambiguously to this phrase: some users said that Kimmel’s humor was extremely flat, while others appreciated the phrase about “a trip that you don’t need to tell your wives about” - it risks becoming a new meme.
2. Emma Stone's second Oscar
Actress Emma Stone could not hold back her tears when she heard that she would receive the coveted statuette, and was not even able to immediately begin her speech because of her voice. The 35-year-old actress’s delight is understandable: this is already her second Oscar.
Lily Gladstone was predicted to win this category for the film “Killers of the Flower Moon” - the first representative of indigenous peoples in the United States to be nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress. The fact that she did not receive the award caused disappointment among many online: people on social networks write that although Stone’s performance is “incredible,” Gladstone deserved the Oscar more based on the totality of her merits.
Stone herself, of course, thanked her competitors in her winning speech and stated that she was “sharing” the award with them: “The women who stand on stage and the women nominated in this category ... Sandra, Annette, Carey, Lily (Sandra Hüller, Annette Bening, Carey Mulligan, Lily Gladstone - Ed.), I share this with you. I am delighted with you. It was a great honor for me to be in this category with you."
3. "Naked" John Cena
Actor and former wrestler John Cena apparently decided to throw his own “naked” party at the Oscars and took the stage in an outfit that was too revealing even for the Oscars. Cena announced the nominees in the “Best Costume Design” category, but he decided to go without clothes: he went on stage almost completely naked, covering his genitals only with a sign with the name of the nomination, which he held in his hands. It later turned out that under the sign there was something similar to a microscopic loincloth (but more reliable than a sock), but the actor still produced the effect.
4. "Protest Dress" by Margot Robbie
Outfits are generally an integral part of every Oscar: after the ceremony, the images of the stars, the best and the worst, are sorted out for more than one day. However, this time everything seems to have gone beyond the red carpet. The center of attention was Margot Robbie, who finally got out of the pink Barbie outfits that everyone was pretty tired of, and appeared at the ceremony in a black strapless Versace dress. Fans saw a message in this choice of color: according to a theory that spread online, Margot was making it clear that she was dissatisfied with the lack of an Oscar nomination for Best Actress. That is why this dress has already been nicknamed the “protest dress.”
Note that the film “Barbie” was ultimately left with almost no prizes, except for Billie Eilish’s victory for best song.
5. Ryan Gosling rocked the ceremony
If Margot Robbie was not nominated at all, then Ryan Gosling was - but remained without an award. And yet, he stole the evening, as they say, with his fiery performance of the song I'm Just Ken in the guise of Ken. The actor took the stage in a pink sparkly suit and proved that his character is not as simple as it seems.
“Let Billie Eilish take the statuette for best song, but Ryan stole the evening,” they write in the comments under the video posted on YouTube. The audience clearly liked Gosling's Kenergy (Ken energy)!
6. Al Pacino: what was that?
But the audience, on the contrary, did not appreciate Al Pacino’s energy, or rather, the almost complete absence of it. The actor appeared on stage to announce the winners for Best Picture. According to the plan, he had to first list all the nominees, and only then name the winner. However, for some reason Al Pacino immediately announced the winner - the film "Oppenheimer". Moreover, it seemed to many that it was Al Pacino’s first time hearing what kind of film it was.
7. Emma Stone's dress bursting with delight
Another actress whose outfit attracted attention at the ceremony was undoubtedly Emma Stone, whose zipper on her dress burst right on stage. Stone herself was not at a loss, but blamed her longtime colleague Ryan Gosling (with whom she is still dating) for this, saying that she was so delighted with his song that even her dress couldn’t stand it.
8. Messi the dog, who looks like Cillian Murphy
Among the guests were not only human actors - a dog named Messi, who starred in the award-nominated film Anatomy of a Fall, was also in the audience.
The artist came to the ceremony wearing a blue bow tie and obediently sat all evening with the hostess. But that’s not why he became the star of the evening, but because he looks like Cillian Murphy—that’s what social networks decided.
And, of course, one of the main moments of the ceremony was the red carpet itself, where the stars showed off their looks. Spltnk collected the most interesting ones, and also noted those stars whose stylists should have thought better about the outfits of their clients.
