"It's just heartbreaking." Julia Roberts on Matthew Perry, with whom she had a three-month affair

Julia Roberts spoke with reporters at the premiere of her new film and spoke about her affair with Matthew Perry and her filming in the TV series “Friends.”

The actress remembered the late actor and said that she had only warm memories of him.

“His death at such a young age is absolutely heartbreaking. I think, you know, it helps us all appreciate what we have and continue to move in the right direction as best we can," she said.

Roberts also recalled filming the series “Friends,” where she played a cameo role as the school friend of Matthew Perry’s character. "They were all so happy to see me, it was a really fun time."

Interestingly, on the set of the series, Matthew Perry and Julia Roberts had an affair that would last three months. The actor himself spoke about this in his memoirs. He admitted that he took advantage of the fact that Roberts starred in “Friends” to get closer to her. For some time after this, they corresponded using fax due to the lack of other methods. “Three or four times a day I sat next to my fax machine and watched the sheet of paper slowly reveal her next message. I was so excited that sometimes at night I would find myself at a party, flirting with an attractive woman, and interrupt the conversation to rush home and see if a new fax had arrived.”

Their relationship, however, was hindered by the actor’s self-doubt. "Two months later I was left alone. Meeting Julia Roberts was too much for me. I was constantly sure that she was going to break up with me. Why not? I wasn't enough, I was broken, unloved. “I didn’t want to face the inevitable agony after I lost her, so I broke up with the beautiful and brilliant Julia Roberts,” wrote Matthew Perry.

"She might have thought she would spend time in the slums with a TV actor, and the TV actor broke up with her. I can't describe the look of confusion on her face."

Matthew Perry died at his home in Los Angeles at the age of 54. No drugs or alcohol were found at the scene of death. The actor struggled with alcohol and drug addiction for many years, which he talked about in his memoirs, published a year ago.
